Cranes are large birds with elongate bills and long, wading legs. These birds superficially resemble herons, but are phylogentically unrelated to them. Unlike herons, cranes fly with their necks outstretched, not held in a s-shaped configuration. Fifteen crane species of are known worldwide. Two species occur in North America.
