Return to Eastern Birds

The family Aramidae contains a single species. The Limpkin is a secretive, large, rail-like bird with a long neck and long legs. The Limpkin feeds mostly on snails it extracts from the shell using the bill as if it were an escargout fork. The species occurs in the American tropics and makes it into Florida and northern Georgia.
