The family Tytonidae (Barn Owls) are owls in every respect and it is not clear to us why they are included with the rest of the owls of the family Strigidae. In general they are long-legged birds, heart-shaped facial disks, and dark eyes. There are 17 species worldwide, but only a single species is found in North America.
