Anhingas are easily recognized by their elongate, s-shaped necks and their long, narrow, pointed bills. Anhingas are apparently closely related to cormorants and share many characters in common. There are 4 species of the family worldwide with a single species known from the swamps and ponds of the southeastern United States.
