Return to Eastern Birds

Cormorants are fish-eating birds found primarily, but not always, along the coasts of North America. The birds are easily recognized by a combination of their long necks, straight, thin bills with a hooked tip, and webbed feet. The feet are placed far back on the body. Cormorants lack oil glands and are commonly seen standing with their wings outstretched to dry them.

There are 38 species of cormorants world wide. Three species are found in eastern North America with several others along the western coast of the continent.
