Return to Eastern Birds

Stilts and Avocets are usually brightly colored wading birds with long, spindly legs, elongate necks, and thin bills. Avocets have the tip of the bill upturned and partially webbed feet. The bill of a stilt is thin, but the tip is not strongly upturned and the feet are not partially webbed. There are seven species worldwide. Two species are found in the eastern United States.
