Return to Eastern Birds

The Vireonidae is an entirely New World family of birds. The birds are mostly tropical and even the North American species commonly migrate south to the tropics for the winter. The species are mostly non-descript birds and can be confused with fall warblers. Unlike warblers, however, the vireos are typically slow and methodical searchers for their insect prey. The nests are usually constructed in the fork of a tree branch. There are 51 species of the family. Twelve species breed in North America.
