Wing span:

Identification: Upperside: Brown base of forewing is separated from red-orange on the outer half by a cream-colored median band. Hindwing is brown with a cream-colored submarginal band.

Life history: Eggs are laid in groups on new leaves of young plants.

Flight: All year in tropical habitats.

Caterpillar hosts: Blechum and Ruellia in the Acanthus family.

Adult food: Nectar from Croton, Cordia, Impatiens, Lantana, and Stachytarpheta; also rotting fruit, dung, and carrion.

Habitat: Wet subtropical forests, edges, and rivers.

Range: Peru north through Central America to Mexico.
