Stinky Leaf Wing (Historis odius [Fabricius])

Wing span: 4 1/2 - 4 3/4 inches (11.4 - 12.0 cm.).

Identification: Large, black and orange. Forewing upperside with apex extended with a white spot on the costal margin below the apex.

Life history: Adults are swift, strong fliers and rest on tree trunks head downward with their wings held closed. Males perch on trees to wait for females. Eggs are laid singly on terminal leaves of the host.

Flight: Florida in June.

Caterpillar hosts: Tree and shrub Cecropia in the fig family (Moraceae).

Habitat: Tropical forests.

Range: West Indies and Mexico south through Central America to Argentina. One reported stray specimen from Florida.
