Sentinel Arctic (Oeneis alpina Kurentzov)

Wing span: 1 1/2 - 1 3/4 inches (3.9 - 4.5 cm).

Identification: Forewing short, not extending beyond hindwing. Upperside of hindwing with two indistinct eyespots on inner corner of wing. Male with basal two-thirds of hindwing brown.

Life history: Not reported. Males perch on hilltops to court females.

Flight: One flight from late June to middle July.

Caterpillar hosts: Not reported

Adult food: Not reported.

Habitat:

Range: Holarctic. In North America found in northern Alaska, northern Yukon, and northwestern Northwest Territories.
