Confused Pellicia (Pellicia angra Evans)

Wing span: 1 1/8 - 1 1/2 inches (2.9 - 3.8 cm).

Identification: Forewings are pointed; wings are black. Forewing has an iridescent purple sheen and is faintly mottled.

Life history: Not reported.

Flight: October-November in South Texas; June-November in Mexico.

Caterpillar hosts: Probably morning glories (Convolvulaceae).

Adult food: Flower nectar.

Habitat: Subtropical.

Range: Panama north through Central America to central Mexico. A rare stray to the lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas.

Comment: The United States records of this species are likely referrable to Pellicia costimacula.
