Stella Orangetip

Stella Orangetip (Anthocharis stella W.H. Edwards)

Wing span: 1 - 1 3/8 inches (2.6 - 3.6 cm).

Identification: Male white or creamy-white, female pale yellow. Male with narrow black discal bar not connected to black edging at the lower margin of the orange patch.

Life history: Not known. Males patrol ridges and hillsides.

Flight: One flight from late to mid-August.

Caterpillar hosts: Rock cresses (Arabis) species.

Habitat: Montane forests, sunny hill slopes, and meadows.

Range: Southwestern Canada (British Columbia and Alberta) south through mountainous regions, west to the Sierra Nevadas and northern Utah, Wyoming, and South Dakota.
