Desert Marble (Euchloe lotta Beutenmüller)

Wing span: 1 1/8 - 1 3/8 inches (2.9 - 3.6 cm).

Identification: Forewing above with black bar lacking scattered white scales; hindwing below with dark green marbling and white areas with a pearly iridescence.

Life history: Caterpillar green or gray-green, usually with a white stripe on either side edged with purple above.

Flight: One flight from February-June.

Caterpillar hosts: Tansymustards (Descurainia) and Rock Cresses (Arabis).

Habitat: Deserts, desert foothills, sagebrush flats, and pinyon-woods.

Range: Southern British Columbia southward through western Washington, Oregon, and California, eastward to Montana, Wyoming, western Coorado, and south into Arizona, southern New Mexico, and northern Mexico.
