Canada Sulphur

Canada Sulphur (Colias canadensis Ferris)

Wing span: 1 1/2 - 1 3/4 inches (3.9 - 4.6 cm).

Identification: Fringes pinkish. Male yellow-orange with narrow black borders and a very small discal dot. Female usually white, but may be orange or yellow with black borders. Underside of hindwing yellow or white with a pink-edged discal spot smeared outwardly. A smaller accessory spot lies above the discal dot.

Life history: Unknown.

Flight: One flight from early May to August, appearing earlier at lower elevations.

Caterpillar hosts: Unknown.

Habitat: Mixed forest in mountain valleys and alpine tundra.

Range: Alaska and northern British Columbia to western N.W. Territories, and south to central Alberta.
