Hecla Sulphur

Hecla Sulphur (Colias hecla Lefebvre)

Wing span: 1 3/8 - 1 3/4 inches (3.6 - 4.3 cm).

Identification: Wing fringes pink. Upperside deep orange. Underside of hindwing dusky green, usually with an elongate pink discal spot.

Life history: Caterpiller green with tiny black spots and a light lateral line along each side.

Flight: One flight from late June to mid August.

Caterpillar hosts: Alpine milk vetch.

Adult food: Flower nectar.

Habitat: Arctic tundra.

Range: Holoarctic. Greenland coast, northern Canada, northern and eastern Alaska, Yukon, and British Columbia.
