Palaeno Sulphur

Palaeno Sulphur (Colias palaeno [Linnaeus])

Wing span: 1 3/8 - 1 5/8 inches (3.6 - 4.1 cm).

Identification: Wing fringes pink. Male wings above with wide black borders; forewing black cell spot usually missing. Underside of the hindwing dusky green with white spot not rimmed with pink. Females usually white with the forewing apical area black.

Life history: Caterpiller green with a yellow lateral line.

Flight: One flight from middle June to early August.

Caterpillar hosts: Arctic Bilberry.

Habitat: Subarctic bogs, taiga openings, and arctic tundra.

Range: Holoarctic. Arctic North America from Alaska east to northwest Quebec and south into northern British Columbia eastward to western Ontario. Also known from Baffin, Victoria, and Southampton Islands.
