Biodiversity:
Measuring the Variety of Nature. Natural History Museum (London).
A tremendous site on biodiversity. Among the topics covered are different
ways of measuring and mapping biodiversity, the concepts of rarity and
endemism, conservation priority and Gap Analysis, biogeography, their
mapping software called "WorldMap", references and links to
related biodiversity sites. Highly recommended.
Biodiversity
and Conservation. Peter J. Bryant, University of California at Irvine.
A wonderful resource for the study of biodiversity and conservation in
the form of an online manual. The manual is divided into a number of chapters
including an introduction, extinction and over-exploitation, whaling and
fishing, global patterns of biodiversity, values of biodiversity, endangered
species protection, deforestation, endangered habitats, pollution, and
more. Highly recommended.
California
Biodiversity Council. This web site is deceptive. It has a short page
on biodiversity and its value. However it has a tremendous set of resources
for teachers on biodiversity. There is a news letter on the conservation
of biodiversity in California. The gold nugget, however, is found if you
click on biodiversity and bioregions. Within this segment of the site,
if you keep clicking, is a wealth of maps and information on the ecoregions
of California, their environment and vegatation, sometimes down to very
local area. Highly recommended.
Biodiversity:
An Overview. World Conservation Monitoring Centre. This page from
the WCMC is an introduction to biodiversity and includes information on
what biodiversity is and its different forms, conservation of biodiversity,
the economic values of biodiversity, and how biodiversity changes over
time and space. Recommended.
Biodiversity
and Conservation. Peter J. Bryant. An online book on all asepcts of
biodiversity and conservation. Among the topics covered are extinction
and depletion from over-exploitation, global patterns of diversity, the
value of biodiversity, endangered species, aquatic habitats, islands,
pollution, protected areas, and much more. Highly recommended.
Just
What is Conservation Genetics? University of Utah School of Medicine.
An excellent introduction to the field of preserving the genetic diversity
of plants and animals. Some of the topics covered are definitions of conservation
genetics, the methodology and importance of genetic diversity, and how
genetic diversity is being reduced in some important plant and animal
populations. Recommended.
Biodiversity
in Canada - A Science Asessment. A general introduction to
biodiversity and in particular biodiversity questions related to Canada.
Covered are the definition of biodiversity, the effects of fishing, forestry
and agriculture on biodiversity, and the the effects of pollutants on
biodiversity.
What
is Biodiversity? World Resources Institute. A general introduction
to the topic of biodiversity and its importance. You'll find, in addition
to
general information, estimates of the number of described species in each
of
the major animal and plant groups (insects rule!!!).
Biodiversity
Bibliography. California Academy of Sciences. A list of
books and papers related to biodiversity.
Species
Diversity - Measurement Indices. Some methodologies used
in measuring biodiversity.
How
can we measure diversity. Ransom A. Myers. Some indices of biodiversity.
Marine
Biodiversity. Ocean Link. A nice, non-technical to biodiversity. The
site has an explanation of what biodiversity and habitat diversity are,
examples of habitat diversity, and an explanation of the concept of genetic
diversity.
Biodiversity.
World Resources Institute. WRI is an conservation advocacy group. This
site has a number of articles on biodiversity and its conservation. There
is a description of biodiversity and what it is as well as short articles
on the estimated number of species of plant and animals species around
the world. The site also discusses habitat and genetic diversity. The
majority of the site is dedicated to conservation initiatives to preserve
biodiversity.
Biodiversity
and its Value. Australia Department of Environment, Sport, and Territories.
A very good introduction to biodiversity and its social and economic value.
The site begins with a description of biodiversity and its components
genetic diversity, species diversity, and habitat (ecosystem) diversity.
You'll also find a glossary of terms and a set of references.
The Biodiversity
Center. Defenders of Wildlife. This segment of the Defenders of Wildlife's
web site is dedicated to biodiversity advocacy, but it includes articles
