The intertidal zone is located on the shore line between the high and low tide levels. Technically the intertidal zone includes beaches and estuaries, but the information on this page is primarily about the rocky intertidal zone and tide pools in and between the rocks.

Life in a Massachusetts Tide Pool. Kimberly Amaral. Pictures and information about the animals you might find in a tide pool along the New England Coast. Highly recommended.

Puget Sound Intertidal Zone. Beach Watchers. This site, written for kids, lets you meet some of the animals you might see in the rocky intertidal zone of Puget Sound in Washington. The first page has pictures of a number of animals. Click on one to get more information about that animal. Recommended.

Rocky Shores. MBWeb. A large gallery of photographs of the intertital zone in North America and the plants and animals that live there. Each photograph illustrates a short vignette about the ecology and makeup of the intertidal zone. The page will take a long time to download, but the wait is worth it. Recommended.

The Virtual Tide Pool. Monterey National Marine Sanctuary. Take a virtual tour of a tide pool at the Monterey National Marine Sanctuary in California. Learn about the various animals that live in the tide pools and how they interact with each other.

The Tide Pool Page. Corrina and Nancy Chase. A great web site on the zonation, organisms, and physical environment of the intertidal zone, particularly for the Pacific Northwest. The site is particularly useful for younger readers. Recommended.

Bishops College Intertidal Zone Field Trip. A virtual trip to the intertidal (between high and low tide marks) zone on the coast of Newfoundland. This site has an introduction to the intertidal zone and a survey of the plants and animals found there.

California's Rocky Intertidal Zones. California Coastal Resource Guide. A short introduction to the intertidal habitat.

A Coastal Journey through the Northwest Intertidal Zone. Nancy Sefton. A great virtual visit to the intertidal zone of the Pacific Northwest with information on, and pictures of, the various plants and animals you might expect to see.

Fitzgerald Marine Reserve. The Fitzgerald Marine Reserve web pages contain a wealth of information on the intertidal zone of California including sections on the life found in the different zones of the intertidal zone and proper care you need to take while you are in the tidal zone to conserve and protect them.

Rocky Intertidal Habitats. Andrew DeVogelaere. An introduction to the biodiversity and community ecology of intertidal habitats in Washington.

Northwest Coast Rocky Intertidal Zonation. Lane Community College. Photographs of, and information about, some of the intertidal animals and plants of the Pacific Northwest.

Biodiversity of the Rocky Intertidal in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. University of California at Santa Cruz. This web site is propaganda for a biodiversity study at Monterey Bay, but it does have some photographs and information about some of the plants and animals found in the intertidal zone of the bay.

Introduction to Marine Botany. Judith Connor and Ben Hale, Hopkins Marine Station. A field course and Stanford University of the algae of Monterey Bay, and the habitats they occur in.

Marine Biology - Intertidal Life. A large collection of pictures and information about plants and animals found in the intertidal zone of the Pacific Northwest.

Algae: The Forgotten Treasure of Tidepools. F. Perez, C. Kjeldsen, and J. Hughley. A wonderful gallery of photographs of Rhodophyta (red algae), Phaeophyta (brown algae), and Chlorophyta (green algae) from the tidepools of California. The site also has a little information about each group and each of the genera illustrated.

1996 Marine Botany Course. Judith Connor and Ben Hale, Hopkins Marine Station. A field course and Stanford University of the algae of Monterey Bay, and the habitats they occur in.

Mapping Intertidal Habitat in Prince Rupert Harbour. Borstad Associates. A technical paper on the mapping techniques use in delineating the intertidal habitat of Prince Rupert Harbor in British Columbia.

Intertidal Trip. A report on a trip to the mudflats of Tom's Cove. Normally this wouldn't be too exciting, but this site has two redeeming features. The first is a gallery of some of the animals they found on the trip. The other is a little game you can play matching the larval stages of several animal species with the adults. You think this is easy? Just see for yourself.
