Wild Calla (Calla palustris)

Identification: "Flower" consisting of a large, oval, white, modified leaf (spathe) as a backdrop to an elliptical spike (spadix) of closely appressed yellowish flowers). Fruits red. Plant with large, heart-shaped leaves on long leaf stalks. Plant 1 to 3 feet in height.

Distribution: Canada southward to Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Indiana in the west to New England in the east and southward to Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Habitat: Wild Calla is an aquatic plant of pond margins, swamps, and bogs.

Flowering period: May to August.
