Golden Club (Orontium aquaticum)

Identification: "Flower" consisting of a long, clublike structure with small flowers clustered along the upper third (spadix). Flower-covered portion of spadix bright yellow. Spathe either absent, or small and easily lost. Leaves broad, sometimes curled up. Plant 1 to 2 feet in height.

Distribution: Found in New York and Massachusetts in the north, westward to Kentucky and West Virginia, and southward to Florida and Texas.

Habitat: Golden Club is an aquatic plant of ponds, shorelines, and swamps.

Flowering period: April to June.

Similar Species:

The bright yellow apical third of the spadix, the aquatic habitat, and the broad leaves are distinctive features of Golden Club.
