Hydrocotyle americana American Wattern Pennywort has the flowers flush with the stem, not on long flower stalks, and the leaf stalk is attached to the base of a cleft in the leaf. Umbellate Water Pennywort (Hydrocotyle umbellata) Identification: Plant aquatic consisting of round leaves attached to a long stem floating on the water. Flowers white arranged in small, globular clusters attached by a long flower stalk to a horizontal runner. Seeds round with lateral ribs. Leaves round, slightly lobed, leaf stalk attached to middle of leaf (peltate). Distribution: New England to Minnesota and southward into South America. Also along the Pacific Coast. Habitat: Umbellate Water Pennywort is a species of swamps, marshes, and other aquatic habitats. Flowering Period: June to September.
