Orache (Atriplex patula)

Identification: Flowers in short, interrupted spikes, green, arising from leaf axils. Stem smooth, usually tinged with red. Leaves mealy, triangular with lower margin straight and with two horizontally projecting points. Plant 10 to 24 inches in height.

Distribution: Throughout North America except in the southwestern and south-central United States.

Habitat: Orache is most commonly found on salty or akaline soils in disturbed habitats.

Flowering period: June to November.

Comments: There are several species of Atriplex in eastern North America. More technical works are needed to identify them. Orache is the most common and widespread species.
