Sea Blite (Suaeda maritima)

Identification: Plant small, usually prostrate on the ground. Flowers exceedingly small, buttonlike, green, arising individually from the leaf axils. Leaves elongate and narrow with untoothed outer margins. Plant 3 to 12 inches in height.

Distribution: Found along the Atlantic Coast from Quebec to Virginia. Also occurs in the state of Wasington.

Habitat: Sea Blite is found in salt marshes and along beaches.

Flowering period: July to October.

Similar Species:

The prostrate, coastal habit of the species along with the small, buttonlike flowers in the leaf axils will usually identify this species.
