Salicornia maritima The stems of Slender Glasswort are succulent, not woody.
Salicornia bigelovii The stems of Dwarf Glasswort are succulent, not woody. Woody Glasswort (Salicornia virginica) Identification: Plant with woody, jointed stems, leaves reduced to fleshy sheaths. Plant may turn red in winter. Flowers extremely small, sunken into the joints, and commonly only the stamens visible. Plant with woody, prostrate stems giving rise to erect, unbranched stems. Plant 4 to 12 in height. Distribution: Found along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts from New Hampshire south to Florida and west to Texas. Also occurs along the Pacific Coast. Habitat: Woody Glasswort is found in salt marshes. Flowering period: August to October. |
