Corn Gromwell (Buglossoides arvense)

Alien: Native of Europe.

Identification: Flowers small, white, with 5 petals, similar to a small, insignificant Forget-me-not flower. Flowers nearly hidden among a series of narrow, pointed, leafy bracts in the leaf axils. Stem hairy. Leaves hairy, narrow and elongate, mostly (although not always) alternate. Plant 6 to 18 inches in height.

Distribution: Throughout most of North America.

Habitat: Corn Gromwell is a weedy species of disturbed habitats such as empty lots, roadsides, and fields.

Flowering period: April to June.

Similar Species:

The hairy foliage and the small, Forget-me-not type flowers hidden in the leaf axils and surround by elongate leaf bracts should identify this species.
