Scarlet Lychnis (Lychnis chalcedonica)

Alien: Native of Europe.

Identification: Flowers red, pink, or white, most commonly red. Flowers with 5 petals, petals deeply bifid at the apex and narrowing toward the base. Flowers crowded and clustered at the apex of the plant. Flower capsule long and narrow, hairy. Leaves broad, oblong, smooth, and sessile to the stem. Plant 2 to 3 feet in height.

Distribution: Found across Canada and southward into the northern United States as far south as Illinois and Pennsylvania.

Habitat: Scarlet Lychnis is a garden escape that has become established along roadsides and in fields.

Flowering period: June to September.
