Rock Sandwort (Minuartia michauxii)

Identification: Flowers white with 5 petals and 5 sepals, petals unnotched, sepals shorter than petals. Leaves needlelike and arranged in whorls about the stem. Plant 6 to 16 inches in height.

Distribution: Throughout most of eastern North America, but absent from the southeastern United States. Also occurs in the Pacific Northwest and the central Plains States.

Habitat: Rock Sandwort is an inhabitant of rocky soils and ledges.

Flowering period: June to July.

Comments: This species has had the name Arenaria stricta in older literature.
