Proliferous Pink (Petrorhagia prolifera)

Alien: Native of Europe.

Identification: Flowers small, pale pink or pale violet, with 5 petals. Flowers arising in succession from between the scales of a head of almost woody bracts atop a round, deep green flower stem. Leaves narrow, elongate, almost grasslike. Plant 6 to 16 inches in height.

Distribution: New York and Ohio, southward to Georgia and Arkansas.

Habitat: Proliferous Pink is found along roadsides and in other disturbed habitats. Also found in scattered localities in the western United States.

Flowering period: June to August.

Similar Species:

The apical, woody cluster of bracts with the flowers appearing successively from beneath the scales is distinctive.
