Phlox subulata Moss Phlox is not a species of New England and Canadian Mountain tops. In addition the leaves of Moss Phlox are much less crowded, and the calyx is not swollen as it is in Moss Campion. Moss Campion (Silene acaulis) Identification: A small plant forming mossy tussocks on open mountaintops. Flowers pink or violet, apices of petals notched. Flower stalks short. Leaves needlelike, crowded, mosslike in appearance. Plant 1 to 3 inches in height. Distribution: Found on mountaintops in New England and the western United States and through the arctic and boreal regions of Canada. Also found in northern Europe and Asia. Habitat: Moss Campion is found on mountain tops and rocky ground in northern North America. Flowering period: June to August. |
