Moss Campion (Silene acaulis)

Identification: A small plant forming mossy tussocks on open mountaintops. Flowers pink or violet, apices of petals notched. Flower stalks short. Leaves needlelike, crowded, mosslike in appearance. Plant 1 to 3 inches in height.

Distribution: Found on mountaintops in New England and the western United States and through the arctic and boreal regions of Canada. Also found in northern Europe and Asia.

Habitat: Moss Campion is found on mountain tops and rocky ground in northern North America.

Flowering period: June to August.
