Wild Pink (Silene caroliniana)

Identification: Flowers pink to lavender in color. Petals wedge-shaped, divergent. Calyx and upper stem sticky. Upper leaves blade-shaped. Basal leaves similar, but larger, and crowded in a crude rosette. Plant 4 to 10 inches in height.

Distribution: New England to Ohio and southward to Florida and Missouri.

Habitat: Wild Pink is found in dry or open forest or woodland clearings.

Flowering period: April to June.

Similar Species:

 The wedge shaped pink to violet petals and the sticky calyx and upper stem are distinctive features of this species.
