Snowy Campion (Silene nivea)

Identification: Flowers white with the 5 petals broad, reduced in size, and not fully spread. Outer margins of petals irregularly toothed. Calyx capsule densely hairy, without a network of veins, wide at the bottom, and tapering toward the petals. Flowers either terminal or on long stalks arising from the leaf axils. Leaves bladelike, in opposite pairs. Plant 1 to 3 feet in height.

Distribution: Minnesota in the west to Pennsylvania in the east, southward to Georgia and Missouri.

Habitat: Snowy Campion is a woodland species.

Flowering period: June to August.

Similar Species:

The reduced white petals with ragged margins and the lack of a colored network on the calyx sac are distinctive features of this species.
