Starry Campion (Silene stellata)

Identification: Flower white, with 5 petals. Apical margin of each petal with a fringe. Flowers on long stalks arranged in a loose panicle. Upper leaves bladelike and in opposite pairs. Lower leaves in whorls of 4 or 5. Plant 2 to 3 feet in height.

Distribution: Minnesota in the west and Massachusetts in the east, southward to Georgia and Texas. Also found in the Plains States.

Habitat: Starry Campion is a woodland species.

Flowering period: July to September.

Similar Species:

The fringed, white petals and the lower whorls of leaves are both distinctive features of Starry Campion.
