Fire Pink (Silene virginica)

Identification: Flowers red with elongate petals, with a notch at the tip of each petal. Flower capsule elongate and conical. Upper and middle leaves bladelike, with smooth outer margins. Lower leaves broadest at the apex and tapering toward the base. Plant 1 to 2 feet in height.

Distribution: Southern Canada and Minnesota, southward to Florida and Louisiana.

Habitat: Fire Pink is found in open woods and on rocky slopes.

Flowering period: April to June.
