Common Chickweed (Stellaria media)

Alien: Native of Europe.

Identification: Flowers with 5 deeply notched petals, sometimes appearing as 10 petals. Sepals as long as or longer than petals. Flower capsules densely hairy. Flowers arising from pairs of sessile, nearly triangular leaves and on long leaf stalks. Lower leaves heart-shaped, but not indented at the base and with long, hairy leaf petioles. Plant 4 to 16 inches in height.

Distribution: Throughout North America.

Habitat: Common Chickweed is a weed found in a variety of disturbed habitats such as empty lots, fields, gardens, and roadsides.

Flowering period: Throughout the year.
