Symphyotrichum cordifolium The basal leaves of Large-leaved Aster arelarger than those of the Heart-leaved Aster and not as coarsely toothed.
Symphyotrichum lowreianum The leaf petioles of Large-leaved Aster lack the lateral flanges of Lowrie's Aster.
Symphyotrichum undulatum The petioles of Large-leaved Aster do not clasp the stem as in the Wavy-leaved Aster. Large-leaved Aster (Eurybia macrophylla) Identification: Flowers with violet (rarely white) ray florets and yellow to red disk florets. Floral bracts (the small leaves of the receptacle of the ray and disk florets) finely woolly with broad tips. Flowering branches sticky with small glands. Leaves heart-shaped with the basal leaves very large (4-8 inches wide), rough, stalked, and deeply indented at the base. Upper leaves small, ovate, and sessile or shortly stalked. Plant 1 to 5 feet in height. Distribution: Minnesota in the west to New England in the east, southward to Georgia and Missouri. Habitat: Woods, or open spaces in woods. Flowering period: August to September. |
