Eupatorium sessilifolium Tall Thoroughwort is most likely to be confused with Upland Boneset. The leaves of Upland Boneset are enlarged toward the base, almost heart shaped. The leaves of Tall Thoroughwort and consistently narrow and are not wider at the base. Tall Thoroughwort (Eupatorium altissimum) Identification: Flowers white, usually in groups of five. Stem tall, downy, with spreading hairs. Leaves opposite, sessile to the stem, thin and elongate with the outer margin toothed. Plant 2 to 6 feet in height. Distribution: Massachusetts in the east and Minnesota in the west extending southward to Florida and Texas. Habitat: This species is found in dry, open places such as meadows and roadsides and has a fondness for calcareous soils. Flowering period: August to October. |
