Zigzag Goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis)

Identification: Plant slender, somewhat between clublike and wandlike. Flowers arising from leaf axils and concentrated toward the top of the plant. Stem zigzag and angled in cross section. Both upper and lower leaves broad, with an apical point, and coarsely dentate. Plant 1 to 3 feet in height.

Distribution: Throughout eastern North America and the northern Plains States.

Habitat: Zig-zag Goldenrod occurs in woods and thickets.

Flowering period: July to October.

The zigzag stem and the broad, pointed, coarsely dentate leaves are characteristic of this species.
