Solidago speciosa This species might be confused with either Showy Goldenrod or Large-leaved Goldenrod. Both of these species, however, have small leaflets arising from the leaf axils. These leaflets are absent from Stout Goldenrod.
Solidago macrophylla This species might be confused with either Showy Goldenrod or Large-leaved Goldenrod. Both of these species, however, have small leaflets arising from the leaf axils. These leaflets are absent from Stout Goldenrod. Stout Goldenrod (Solidago squarrosa) Identification: Plant with flower clusters thick, clublike. Flowers large, arising from the leaf axils, concentrated toward the top of the plant. Flower bases with stiff, recurved bracts. Upper leaves ovate, elongate, smooth to weakly toothed. Basal leaves very large, strongly toothed, and sometimes forming a basal rosette. Stem stout, sometimes reddish in color. Plant 1.5 to 5 feet in height. Distribution: Indiana in the west to New England in the east, southward to North Carolina and Tennessee. Habitat: This species in found on dry, rocky soils along the margins of forests or in forest clearings. Flowering period: August to October. |
