Vaccinium oxycoccus The flowers of Small Cranberry arise from only the apex of the plant and leaves are pointed at the apex.
Vaccinium vitis-idaea The flowers of Mountain Cranberry do not have reflexed petals and the flowers are borne in clusters on short flower stalks. Large Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) Identification: Plant a low, creeping shrub. Flowers white or pink with 4 downward curved, narrow petals. Stamens and pistil form a projecting beak. Flowers on long flower stalks, arising from the leaf axils along the stem. Berries large turning bright red when mature. Leaves elongate-ovate, leathery, blunt at the apex. Distribution: Minnesota in the west to Newfoundland in the east, southward to Illinois, North Carolina, and Virginia. Also occurs along the Pacific Coast. Habitat: Large Cranberry is found in bogs. Flowering period: June to August. Comments: This species is the source of the commercial cranberry. |
