Vaccinium macrocarpon Large Cranberry is a larger plant and the flower stalks arise from along the stem, not just at the stem's apex. The leaves are blunt, not pointed. Small Cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccus) Identification: Plant a low, creeping shrub. Flowers white or pink with 4 downward curved narrow petals. Stamens and pistil form a projecting beak. Flowers on long flower stalks, arising only from the tip of the stems. Berries large, turning red when mature. Leaves elongate-ovate, leathery, white on the underside, the edges rolled, and pointed at the apex. Distribution: Most of Canada southward to Minnesota, Ohio, and New Jersey, and southward in the mountains to Virginia. Also occurs in the Pacific Northwest and in northern Europe and Asia. Habitat: Small Cranberry lives in bogs. Flowering period: May to July. |
