Vaccinium macrocarpon The lack of downward curved petals and a beak will distinguish Mountain Cranberry from either Small Cranberry or Large Cranberry. Mountain Cranberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) Identification: Plant creeping with erect stems. Flowers tubular, white to pink, with petals only slightly separate as pointed lobes. Petals not recurved downward. Flowers occur in small clusters. Berry large, red when mature. Stems smooth, woody. Leaves ovate-elongate, leathery, whitish below, and with their margins curled. Plant 2 to 8 inches in height. Distribution: Most of Canada southward to Minnesota and New England. Also occurs in northern Europe and Asia. Habitat: Mountain Cranberry occurs in bogs. Flowering period: June to July. |
