Hydrophyllum appendiculatum Broad-leaved Waterleaf is similar to Appendaged Waterleaf. However the flowers of Appendaged Waterleaf are violet, not white to pale violet. The stem of Appendaged Waterleaf is hairy, not smooth and the flower stalks usually exceed the leaves in length. Broad-leaved Waterleaf (Hydrophyllum canadense) Identification: Flowers white to pale violet, delicate, with 5 petals and a series of long, projecting stamens. Flowers arranged in a loose cluster arising on a long flower stem from below a leaf, but not exceeding the leaf in length. Stem smooth. Leaves without separate lobes, maplelike, with sharply projecting lobes. Plant 6 to 20 inches in height. Distribution: Missouri and Michigan in the west to New England in the east southward to Georgia. Habitat: Found in forested habitats. Flowering period: June to July. |
