Bullhead Lily (Nuphar lutea)

Identification: Plant aquatic with large, floating leaves. Flowers yellow, globular, with the apparent petals consisting of yellow sepals concealing the highly modified petals. Flower disc with a central, disklike structure.Yellow sepals with green bracts at their bases. Flower at the tip of an emergent thick, green stalk. Leaves ovate, heart-shaped, with a deep, triangular indentation.

Distribution: Throughout North America.

Habitat: Bullhead Lily is found in ponds and in the slow moving water of rivers and streams.

Flowering period: May to September.

Comments: This species is variable and a number of populations and varieties have been given specific status in the past.
