Yellow Iris (Iris pseudacorus)

Alien: Native of Europe.

Identification: Flowers yellow, complicated in structure with petals and sepals all showy. Flower with 3 lower "sepals" hanging downward, base with a shoehorn-like appendage (crest). "Sepals" heavily veined with brown. Upper 3 "petals" narrower and pointing generally upward. Seed pods elongate, ovate. Leaves sword-shaped, elongate, flattened and overlaping each other. Plant 1 to 3 feet in height.

Distribution: Local, but distributed throughout North America.

Habitat: Yellow Iris is found in marshes and along streams and rivers.

Flowering period: May to July.
