Hibiscus laevis Swamp Rose Mallow can be mistaken for Halberd-leaved Mallow. The lower leaves of Halberd-leaved Mallow are elongate and arrowhead-shaped, not ovate. The lower sides of the leaves of Halberd-leaved Mallow lack fine white hairs. Swamp Rose Mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos) Identification: Flowers large (4 to 8 inches in diameter), either white with a red to purple center or pink with a yellow center and yellow stamens. Stamens in an elongate, fused column. All leaves ovate with a toothed outer margin. Underside of leaves with a fine, white pubescence. Plant 5 to 7 feet in height. Distribution: Found primarily along the Atlantic Coast from Massachusetts to Florida. Also occurs inland throughout most of eastern North America, the south central United States and California. Habitat: Swamp Rose Mallow is a species of brackish marshes. Flowering period: July to September. |
