Desmodium glutinosum The whorled leaves and elongate flower stalk separate from the leaf stalk will usually identify this species. Pointed-leaved Tick-Trefoil is similar but the flower stalk arises from the whorl of leaves and the top leaflet is rounder and has a acute apex. Naked-flowered Tick-Trefoil (Desmodium nudiflorum) Identification: Plant erect. Flowers pealike, lavender, lower petals elongate and projecting. Base of standard (large top "petal") with two dark spots at base. Seedpods with 2 or 3 segments. Flowers widely separated on a tall (18 to 36 inches), leafless flower stem arising from the base of the plant, and separate from the stem bearing the leaves. Leaves arranged in a whorl about 6 to 8 inches from the base of the plant. Leaves divided into 3 leaflets, each broad, ovate, but variable in shape. Plant 1 to 3 feet in height. Distribution: Throughout eastern North America. Habitat: Naked-flowered Tick-Trefoil is found in a variety of forest types, but most commonly dry woods. Flowering period: July to August. |
