Perfoliate Bellwort (Uvularia perfoliata L.)

Identification: Flower single, yellow to yellow-green, bell-shaped and hanging. Flower stalk appears to pierce the leaves. Inside of flower dotted with orange granules. Leaves smooth, strongly clasping stem. Plant 6 to 18 inches in height.

Distribution: Throughout most of eastern North America.

Habitat: Perfoliate Bellwort is found in a variety of wet woods.

Flowering period: May to June.

Similar Species: Perfoliate Bellwort is most likely to be confused with Large-flowered Bellwort. The inside of the flower of Perfoliate Bellwort is covered with orangish granules. The inside of the flower of Large-flowered Bellwort is smooth and lacks granules. The apparent piercing of the leaves of Perfoliate Bellwort will separate it from Wild Oats and Mountain Bellwort.
