New England Blue Violet (Viola novae-angliae House)

Identification: Leaves basal and flowers on separate stalks. Flowers violet with two lateral and lower petals all bearded (erect hairs). Flower petals with a slight red tint. Leaves elongate-triangular with apex acutely produced.

Distribution: Southeastern Canada extending southward to Minnesota in the west to New York in the east.

Habitat: New England Blue Violet is found along the shores of lakes and rivers.

Flowering period: May to June.

Similar Species: New England Blue Violet is most similar to Sand Violet and the two are nearly indistinguishable. The flowers of New England Blue Violet have a reddish tint missing in Sand Violet.
