Big Bend Blackhead Snake (Tantilla cucullata)

Identification: Snake 7 to 15 inches in length. Color variable from yellow-gray to gray, to slightly greenish gray. Head dark black with the black extending down to the upper jaw and to the rear margin of the jaw. Black extending onto the neck and ending abruptly after 4 to 5 rows of the small scales following the larger scales of the head. Rear margin of black square, neither concave nor pointed. No light band or secondary black band present. Underside white.

Geographical Variation: None.

Range (see map below left): The Big Bend Black-headed Snake has a limited distribution in the Big Bend Mounts of southwestern Texas and the slightly more eastern Pecos ands Devils Rivers.

Habitat: This species is found in dry, rocky grasslands or pine-oak habitats, particularly along hillsides.

Food: Unknown, but probably similar to the prey of other species of the genus.

Behavior: Nocturnal, but otherwise little known.

Reproduction:  Unknown.
