Leucania stolata is closely related, and very difficult to separate by superficial appearance from Leucania new species 0001. This new species has a prominent dark streak from the lower margin (inner margin) for the forewing arising from near the base of the wing. In general this species is more prominently marked and lacks the glossy sheen of stolata. The most distinctive differences, however, are found in the male genitalia and are indicated by blue arrows in the photographs. Leucania new species 0001 Diagnosis: Leucania new species 0001 is a species of the U.S. Southwest and presumably Mexico. The forewing is creamy yellow but lacks a glossy sheen. A strong, prominent white lines runs from the base of the wing to the discal dot and is accented below with dark gray. The discal dot is a small, gray spot and is followed by a triangular gray patch angled toward the outer margin of the wing. A dark, near black streak arises from the lower (inner) margin near the base of the wing. The outer margin of the wing has small, gray, diffuse streaks. Hindwing pure white. Distribution: This new species ranges from central Texas in the east to southeastern New Mexico in the west. Presumably it also ranges into Mexico, but this has not yet be verified. Identification Quality: Good. The relationship between this presumptive new species and Leucania stolata, particularly in Mexico, still needs to be studied. Habitat: The collection localities are mostly (but not all) dry montane regions in the southwestern United States. However, there is no information about specific habitats. Foodplants: Unknown, but presumably grass species. Larval Description: None available |
